my birthday
Yesterday was my 30th birthday.............I am embracing the new and showing gratitude for the gifts I have been given in my 30 years on this planet. I am letting go of the old that stifles my growth, allowing nothing to hold me back. Living the best way I know how and continuing on my journey with grace and love.

the bowls
Yesterday went to a crystal bowls ceremony. The vibrations of the bowls ringing has a very meditative and healing property as the sound resonates with your body and mind. The perfect thing for a Sunday afternoon.

yoga
I have been going to yoga at least once a week for the past 6 weeks or so. It's been a while since I have been on the mat regularly; I almost forgot how amazing it is to me. The space I am in when I am at the studio is at ease, in a place of comfort and growth. That space is where I want to be. Yoga challenges me in ways unlike anything else. It makes me stronger in new ways. It keeps me growing. It's part of the balance.

the balance
Is what it is all about. In order to keep yourself in a position to grow, a balance must be maintained. I am reminded of something my dad once said, "you need three things in this life; work, play, and love." He's right. For me, though, I think of it more like equilibrium between the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual sides of myself. Keeping the body strong, the mind sharp, the heart open, and the spirit forever seeking. Sometimes they can get out of alignment, but there is always a reminder if you are open to see it; the return of balance never getting more than a small step away.
I was recently reminded of this a few weeks ago as I came down with bronchitis. It is important not only to stop and allow yourself to recover from a setback, but to take that with you and recognize the way in which you have thrown the balance out of alignment. Remember it, use it, always allow for growth. Never stop growing.

bike ride
11/9/08- Sunday rode 21.1 miles out to West Chester. Not nearly enough, although I am graced with acceptance for things that may temporarily get in the way. Control is just an illusion. I am the rock.

conventional beauty is symmetry, endearment is wabi-sabi
The western idea of beauty is defined as symmetry. Symmetry is perfection, which rarely, if ever, exists in the natural world. Striving for symmetry is something that can never really be obtained. Wabi-sabi, on the other hand, is a Japanese aesthetic that centers around the idea of transience. Beauty found in impermanence and incompleteness. Wabi-sabi has a certain intimate quality; things which are simple, modest, and natural are very endearing. Your faded sweatshirt with the zipper that doesn't always work right, is often times more important than anything new and perfect. Freckles or a slightly off center nose are the things that make us smile about those we love. The asperity of an unshaven face or messy hair, the modesty of a shy gaze, the organic smell of someones skin, these are all wabi-sabi.
Nothing can ever be perfect, yet imperfections can be captivating; and the embrace of that syncretism is beautiful. To me.

bike ride
Rode 34 miles total Saturday 9/20 from Conshy to South Philly for burrito club and back.

What you put out in the universe is what you get back from it; me and the universe, we are like this...

am running
3 miles in the Me-dia loop today before work. I hope to make enough time someday for 5.
I think I may be addicted to the sense I get from running that comes after losing the jarring abrasiveness that a run always starts with. When it isn't uncomfortable anymore and the effort I am making is almost minimal, I get to where I feel like I can go on forever. I am one with my body and it is serving me in its highest capacity. I don't feel that way every time I run, sometimes it hurts and I get a cramp and hate it; but when I can get there, it is perfection.
Biking could quite possibly turn this way for me as well.

power and intention
This is a concept that I have been thinking about a lot lately. It is very easy to become caught up in what we feel we want and obtaining those goals we set for ourselves in which we will make us happy. In our society, intention is usually thought of as a drive within us that combines tenacity and hard work and ultimately leads to success. In this way intention can be construed as power. People feel they need power to get what they want, so logically, it stands to reason that if you set your intention strongly and powerfully enough, you'll get what you want.
Not so fast. If those intentions are not pure you won't gain the power you so strongly desire. So what is meant by pure intentions? Intention is not about a single minded focus on wanting to succeed or win at all costs. It's not about choosing something because you think it is a good idea, or because someone else is doing it. Striving for a goal that you want for the wrong reasons is not a pure intention. Pure intentions are unselfish and rooted in love; you should really love whatever it is that you set out to do in order to make it work. Purity of intention is beautiful; when you can come to see the beauty that is all around you, even in the worst circumstances, it sets about an expansion of mind to all the possibilities that are there for you. These possibilities are infinite; there absolutely are no limitations to what you can have. When intention is right, things will begin to work out because you are open to giving and not only receiving.
I think a good place to start is to seek out those things in our lives that we love to do, not for what we think they do for us, or how they make us appear in the eyes of others; but things we do with mindfulness that in turn impart harmony with the moment we are in.
